Fruit & food guide

Apple, stone fruit, kiwi, avocado and cherry packaging guide

Larger fruit is sold either by the piece, in clamshells with a cup for each fruit (2, 4 or 6 apples, 1 or 2 avocados, 3 to 5 kiwifruit), or by weight in larger clamshells and flowpack trays. Cups stop ripe fruit touching and bruising, which is what premium 'ready to eat' ranges need.

By piece or by weight

  • By piece: cupped clamshells hold each fruit apart. Used for premium apples, peaches, nectarines, avocados and kiwifruit.
  • By weight: 12 oz to 1 kg clamshells for apricots, plums, mandarins and cherries; flowpack and overwrap trays for value packs.

Ripeness

Ripe-and-ready fruit bruises at the touch points. Cups that match the fruit size, and a lid that does not press down, protect it to the shelf. Check the cup diameter against your largest count size before ordering.

Cherries

Cherries need their green stems protected and some ventilation; a deep vented clamshell or a 450 g heat-seal punnet are the usual choices.
