Is rPET packaging safe for food contact?
Short answer
Yes, when the recycled PET comes from a decontamination process approved for food contact. AVI produces its food-grade rPET with Starlinger deCON decontamination at its own facility, under BRCGS Packaging Materials and ISO 22000 certification, and supplies food-contact documentation for the specific grade, food type and destination market.

What to ask your supplier for
- The recycling process: for the EU, a process assessed by EFSA under Regulation (EU) 2022/1616.
- Food-contact documentation for the grade, the food (fresh produce, fatty or acidic foods) and the conditions of use.
- Site certification: BRCGS Packaging Materials and ISO 22000 cover how the packaging is made and handled.
- Recycled-content evidence if you also need to report or claim the recycled percentage (EN 15343).
AVI's team can send the documents that apply to your order.

Does recycled content change how the pack looks?
High-clarity rPET grades keep the produce visible; higher recycled content can give a very slight tint, which samples show.
