PVC, blister and specialty films guide

Beyond PET packs, rigid films do specialist jobs: PVC for pharma blisters, cards and print; PVDC-coated films for moisture barrier; ESD sheet that protects electronics from static; and multi-layer high-barrier films for meat and dairy. This guide explains each and when to choose it.

Choosing a film

Need Film
Pharma blister PVC (AVI Blis), PVDC-coated for higher barrier; PET for PVC-free
Retail blister or box PVC or PET
Cards and print PVC (AVI Card, AVI Print) or PET
Electronics trays ESD anti-static PET
Meat, dairy, MAP PET/EVOH/PE or PET/PA/PE barrier film

Medicines are different

A medicine's blister film is named in its registration, so changing film means revalidation. Start from the approved specification; AVI Blis is made for pharmaceutical blisters, and AVI's team supplies the grade documents your file needs.

Ask for the data

Every specialist film is qualified on test data: barrier rates, surface resistivity, cold-crack behaviour. AVI's team supplies grade-specific data for your trials.

Terms in this guide

Blister pack
A formed plastic cavity sealed to a backing of foil (medicines) or printed card (retail goods).
ESD (electrostatic discharge)
A sudden flow of static electricity that can damage electronic parts. ESD-safe packaging controls static build-up.
EVOH
Ethylene vinyl alcohol, a plastic layer with a very high oxygen barrier, used inside multi-layer films and trays.
High-barrier film
A multi-layer film that blocks oxygen and moisture, such as PET/EVOH/PE, for meat, dairy and other sensitive food.
Micron
One thousandth of a millimetre, the unit for sheet and film thickness: 300 microns is 0.3 mm.
PVC
Polyvinyl chloride, resin code 3: a rigid, clear sheet long used for pharma blisters, cards and printing.
PVDC coating
A polyvinylidene chloride coating that raises the moisture and oxygen barrier of blister film.
