How do you calculate the weight of a plastic sheet or roll?

Short answer

Weight = area × thickness × density. In practice, grams per square metre = thickness in microns × density in g/cm³. APET is about 1.33–1.35 g/cm³, so 300-micron APET weighs about 400 g/m². A roll 600 mm wide and 500 m long of that sheet weighs about 0.6 × 500 × 0.4 ≈ 120 kg. Ask AVI for the exact density of your grade.

The formula

Weight (g) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (µm) × density (g/cm³)

That works because 1 m² of sheet 1 micron thick and density 1 g/cm³ weighs exactly 1 g.

Worked examples

Sheet Thickness Density Weight per m²
APET 300 µm 1.34 402 g
PETG 500 µm 1.27 635 g
Rigid PVC 250 µm 1.38 345 g

A roll: 0.6 m wide × 500 m long × 402 g/m² = 120.6 kg.

Why it matters

Sheet is sold by weight but used by area, so the calculation tells you how many packs a roll yields, and plastic taxes and EPR fees are charged by weight too.

What are typical densities?

APET about 1.33–1.35 g/cm³, PETG about 1.27, rigid PVC about 1.35–1.40, PP about 0.90. Grade data sheets give the exact figure.

How do I work out roll length from weight?

Length (m) = roll weight (kg) ÷ (width in m × weight per m² in kg). For 120 kg of 0.6 m wide, 0.4 kg/m² sheet: 120 ÷ 0.24 = 500 m.
