What is a punnet, and what sizes do punnets come in?
Short answer
A punnet is a small retail pack for soft fruit and vegetables such as berries, grapes and cherry tomatoes. AVI's rPET punnets run from 125 g (4.4 oz) blueberry packs like the PNG 108 / 40 to 1 kg grape clamshells like the PNG 501 / 126; the most common size is 250 g, such as the PNG 250 / 75 (128 × 94 × 75 mm).

Types of punnet
- Clamshell punnet: lid and base in one piece, joined by a hinge; reopens and re-closes.
- Open-top punnet or tray: no lid; closed with film, a net or an outer pack.
- Heat-seal punnet: an open tray sealed with lidding film on a tray-sealing machine; tamper-evident.
- Flowpack tray: a tray wrapped in film on a flow-wrap line.
How much does a punnet hold?
In AVI's catalogue, strawberry punnets are documented for 190 g, 250 g, 300 g (1 pint) and 500 g; grape punnets for 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg; blueberry packs for 125 g (4.4 oz). The exact weight depends on the variety and size of the fruit, so the final check is a sample run.
